About This Item

About this Item: Chez Pillet Aine, Imprimeur-Libraire, Paris, 1819. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This historic and rare book, printed 200 years ago is in good condition. Binding is worn although the spine and gilt printed label is clear and quite readable. Book is probably a former library book or part of a collection assembled probably in 1921. Book has original marbled paste-downs and FFE and LEP. There is a former owners fine book-plate on the front paste-down. Book is complete, finely printed with trimmed edges. Thee is a page torn out, ( page 1-2) after the 12 page forward. This wonderful survivor is printed in French, and would be an excellent candidate for a rebinding. This is a very rare and valuable piece of history. Saint-Domingue was the name of the French Colony of Haiti. Prior to gaining independence in 1804, This French colony was considered the most important source of revenue in All of France and possibly all the world. Haiti was the most important source for coffee and sugar to Europe. To accomplish this the French planters imported over 800,000 African slaves to the colony which was double the amount imported to North America. From 1791 until 1804 the slaves in Haiti participated in a protracted and successful revolt leading to independence. During that period, the author of this book was a magistrate in Port-Au-Prince and had first hand knowledge of the history of the revolution. This book is highly collectible and a special source of historical information dealing with that period in Haiti and France. Seller Inventory # 001577
