SIGNED WITH DEDICATION BY AUTHOR IN RED INK ON BACK OF FFEP. ALSO, TYPED LETTER FROM OWNER TO AUTHOR FOLDED INSIDE. Condition of the book is GOOD+ ; corners and ends of spine bumped and slightly worn. white spotting and scuffing (light) to covers and spine. Text very clean, binding sound. Upper text block slightly darkened. DJ condition is GOOD ; a number of open tears, ends of spine missing, lots of wear, faded, spine more faded. Not price-clipped.

First Edition. fair to good, partial only. 22 cm, 361, endpaper maps, bibliography, appendices, index, DJ flaps and rear DJ cut off and pasted inside rear board & flyleaf. Blue pencil underlining on several pages. Published for the Council on Foreign Relations. This work addresses the impact of the atomic bomb on the defense of the United States, and was the result of 18 meetings of the Study Group on National Power and Foreign Policy, chaired by Baldwin. Participants included I. I. Rabi and James Shotwell.

Harper & Brothers. New York. 1947. Black cloth boards with Harper's blind stamp on front board and gilt lettering to spine. Map endpapers. Bump on front board, top and bottom of spine bumped. First edition (stated) with correct B-X printer's (month/year) code. Inscribed by author on verso of the flyleaf. Unclipped ($3.75) jacket has 1 inch closed tear on top of rear, small chipping on edges and a five inch closed linear tear on front of spine. Jacket now protected with removable mylar cover. Included is a Memorandum from the desk of Turner Catledge that references this copy being gifted to Elaine. Mr. Catledge was an American journalist for the New York Times and managing editor from 1952-1964. Mr. Baldwin (1903-1991) was an American journalist and long-time military editor of the New York Times. During WW II Baldwin wrote about the South Pacific, North Africa and Europe.
