About This Item

New York: Huntington & Savage and Mason & Law, 1851. Hardcover. Poor. Disbound, covers detached, no spine, lacks front endpapers and preliminaries, title page has a hole, pages including title page are soiled and stained, otherwise complete. Copyrighted in 1848 by William W. Ellsworth and Henry White, executors of Noah Webster, deceased. Sub-titled "Abridged from the American Dictionary by Noah Webster, LL.D. With Accented Vocabularies of Classical Scripture, and Modern Geographical Names." The title page notes 10,00 more words than Walker's Dictionary. W. G. Webster's preface disparages Walker's, particularly his pronunciations. The book has a rich Western provenance as the detached rear cover carries the ownership inscription of John Martin, Aleman Ranch New Mexico San Augustine. In similar hand and ink on the rear free endpaper is written Sulphur Springs Vandergriff Vanderbit Mamfold (?) Doubtful Canyon. At the top of the page in pencil is written O. U (?) Spencer Sulphur Springs. In the 1860's John Martin, lieutenant of a California company of volunteers and homesteader of the Aleman Ranch on the Jornada del Muerto, drilled the first well in the area. The other names are mainly New Mexico place names. A scarce pre-Civil War dictionary for schools. Small, 24 mo. Most items ship with free delivery confirmation, electronic tracking and jacket protectors (generally over $10.00) if applicable. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.
