Description:
Octavo, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, black morocco label, engraved portrait of Pestalozzi + (1) + 390pp, an excellent copy.Printing and the Mind of Man, no.258.
First edition containing an exhaustive exposition of Pestalozzi's principles of education and the book on which Pestalozzi's fame rests. "How Gertrude teaches her children" proclaimed something entirely new in the field of popular education – the principle of self-activity in acquiring and using knowledge in its first stages. The most important and forward-looking of his ideas, which he stressed continually in practice as well as precept, was that the true method of education is to develop the child, not to train him as one trains a dog. The pupil must be regarded as more important than the subject and the 'whole man' must be developed.

Description:
1545 Saint Venerable BEDE Bible & Commentary English Monk Church Cosmology Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. He also wrote important commentaries on the books of the Bible. This work explains relevant Biblical passages, as well as describes the allegorical notes of Church Fathers. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. He also wrote on the development of time and ideas of cosmology.
This 16th-century Latin edition was published in Paris by Roigny. An impressive, three-volume folio set!

ORIGIN OF THE MYTHMAKING OF THE ENGLISH REFORMATION.16mo. Bound in 20th century full calf; spine with 4 raised bands; red leather label with gilt letters on spine. The definitive edition of Bale's work. 56 leaves (112 pages) longer than the 1551 edition. STC 1274. Bale's Englysh votaryes established the received history of the English church and Reformation, including the notions that the English church was the purest of the early Christian churches, and that the entire history of England could be understood as s battle against the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. Bale's anti-Catholic chronicle, full of salacious accounts of medieval English clergy, had a decisive influence on John Foxe and his Book of Martyrs.
