About This Item
Englewood Cliffs NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1974. First printing. 8vo, pp. xiv, 175. Index. A VG tight copy in slightly chipped and soiled dj. Consumption, Fickleness, Round Shoulders, Paralysis, Acne, and Epilepsy - are just a few of the 39 signs of ''secret vice'' (masturbation) in children as set forth by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg in 1877. From claims like these, to Victorian opinions on prostitution, birth control, and sex roles, this book presents a sample of the sexual advice - so wrong-headed by contemporary standards - taken seriously by 19th century America.
