London: David Nutt, 1909. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. 8vo, 2 vols., dark blue decorated and gilt-embossed cloth with gilded crest on front covers, 325 & 328 pages. SCARCE and Important two-volume set. Dark blue boards; gilt stamping on front board and along spine with title and author's name. Some foxing and very occasional light scholarly pencil notes in margins. Previous owner's name in small, non-descript ink on upper-right hand corner of front flyleaf. Edwin Sidney Hartland (1848-1927) was an author of many works on folklore. He believed such studies and ethnology provided important scientific insights into customs and religion. PRIMITIVE PATERNITY covers such subjects as the transmigration of souls, "Motherright," and the "Rise of Fatherright," in the context of other primitive supernatural beliefs.
