About This Item

London, UK: George G Harrap, 1938. 1st Edition 1st Impression. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First edition. 348pp, with black and white maps and illustrations, indexed. In brown cloth-covered boards, with blind rules for decoration, and gilt titles (cloth a little rubbed on edges and corners, rubbed and rounded at ends of a sunned spine). Previous owner's name and address on front free endpaper, and mild toning on endpapers and at page margins. A few strained gutters. The preface indicates that the purpose of this volume is to provide reliable information 'about certain simple societies as is often only to be found in the original memoirs of an observer'. Sections include Hunters and Collectors, Hunters and Fishers, Gardeners, and Herders and societies examined include Asiatic Pygmies, Plains Indians, Bushmen of the Kalahari, Eskimos, Herders of Arabia etc. A product of its time, the book adopts a paternalistic approach, providing a useful insight into the thinking of the time. 8vo.
