About This Item
New Castle DE: Oak Knoll Press, 1994. reprint. Softcover. Very Good/None. Softcover, 505 pages. Reprint of the first edition published in 1949. With an Introduction by G. Thomas Tanselle. One of the indisputable classics of 20th-century scholarship, Bowers's work is one of the standard guides on the subject, providing a comprehensive manual for the description of printed books as physical objects. Although there has been much activity in descriptive bibliography since then, Principles still holds its place as the central book to which those engaged in bibliographical work continually return. Name on half-title page, otherwise clean. Record # 383968
Synopsis
From the text: "The craze for first impressions of first editions, and first issues of first impressions of first editions, and first states of first impressions of first editions, has occasionally resulted in speculation and bibliographical absurdity among collectors and dealers.... Any minor change made in the course of the original printing is immediately seized on as constituting an 'issue.' A trial binding used for perhaps twenty copies of salesmen's samples becomes a rare 'first issue.'"
