Boston: Joseph Bumstead, Printer, 1792. Leather. Good. Full calf leather. Stated fourth edition. 424 pp. Volume one only. An American edition of this important philosophical treatise on law. Written by Jean-Jacques Burlamaqui, a Swiss (Genevan) political theorist. His work influenced the founding fathers of America, including ideas of checks and balances and a natural right to happiness. This volume looks at the general principles of right, including the concepts of liberty, as well as sections on laws of nature, the ideas of government, etc. GOOD condition. General fading and heavy scuffing to the leather. Minor soiling. Moderate edgewear, with loss of leather to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges cracked, with moderate wear to the spine. Owner's signatures in the interior. Some toning to the paper, Scattered foxing throughout.
