About This Item
London: Macmillan, 1907. Fourth edition. Hardcover. vg. 8vo. xliv, 786 pp. Orange cloth with gold lettering on spine. Frontis piece displaying b/w engraving of "The Logical Machine" a kind of proto-calculator. William Stanley Jevons (1835 - 1882), was an English economist and logician, was born in Liverpool. His writings, particularly this work, marked the opening of a new period in the history of economic thought. Jevons arrived quite early in his career at the doctrines that constituted his most characteristic and original contributions to economics and logic. The theory of utility, which became the keynote of his general theory of political economy, was that "philosophy would be found to consist solely in pointing out the likeness of things." This theory together with the idea that a commodity is some continuous mathematical function of the quantity of the commodity available, lead to the modern doctrine that economics is essentially a mathematical science. Regular, light shelf wear to exterior. Signature of former owner on front endpaper, otherwise book is in very good condition.
