About This Item

Boston: Colby and Rich, 1875. First edition. Octavo. 128 pp. Publisher's printed buff wrappers. Some soiling and agint o wrappers but a very good and clean copy of this fragile book. Epes Sargent was a man of many abilities. Born to a good family in 1813 he traveled and learned widely and by the 30s he was friends with Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun. During this time he also collaborated with Samuel Griswold Goodrich, writing the Peter Parley books. By 1839 he was the editor for the New York Mirror and The New World. H was in addition a successful playwright and a member of the Knickerbockers. In the late 40s he retuned to his hometown of Boston to be the editor of the Boston Evening Transcript. At around this time Sargent became captivated with the notion of communicating with the dead. He hosted many seances, and philosophical discussions. He published Planchette, or the Despair of Science (1869), The Proof Palpable of Immortality (1875), and The Scientific Basis of Spiritualism (1880). Chapters include; Materializations of the past -- Phenomenal proofs of immortality -- Materializations at Moravia, N.Y., and elsewhere -- Materializations in England -- Scientific investigations -- Spirit and matter -- Priority of spirit -- More of the phenomena through Miss Cook -- American phenomena -- Materializations through the Eddy family -- The spirit-body -- Power of spirit over matter -- Unity of forces and phenomena -- Relations of spiritualism to belief in God -- The divine nature triune -- Relations of spiritualism to morality -- The mesage of spiritualism -- Further proofs palpable.
