About This Item
Tight, square, uncreased spine. Clean, unmarked interior. Toned pages and a small area of soiling to the back cover, but no other notable wear. An unlikely but powerful pairing here in Pinter's unproduced film adaptation of Proust, undertaken with the assistance of blacklisted Hollywood director Losey and translation giant Bray. The identical twin sister of fellow translator Olive Classe, Bray mentored Pinter while working at the BBC Third Programme and was the longtime romantic partner of Samuel Beckett. Cover designer Kenneth R. Deardoff, who succeeded Roy Kuhlman as art director at Grove Press, also provided designs for Jean Genet's Querelle, Allen Ginsberg's Journals, and Kenzaburo Ōe's Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness. According to Mark Kaufman, who studied under Deardoff at the School of Visual Arts in the late 1970s, 'While everyone else was trying to be punker and hipper and more jaded than the next person, Ken was the epitome of the dapper, mid-century graphic designer.' 177 pp.
