About This Item
Who doesn't love the Psalms? This 564-page volume is an excellent exposition of the Psalter by a renowned scholar. This Baker Bookhouse 2nd printing (April 1977), was reproduced from the edition issued in Edinburg in 1873. It is part of the Baker Religious Heritage Library and is considered a classic.
One website states this about Alexander's work: "The work before us exhibits no lack of accurate scholarship. It was not designed to be of a controversial, doctrinal, or devotional character, but to be a literal translation of the Psalter, with brief explanatory comments. Its marked feature is its rigid adherence to the form of expression in the original, and to the Hebrew tenses; preserving thus the spirit and strength of that Oriental language. The basis of Prof. Alexander's work, is the Commentary of Henjrstenberg, whose results he has compactly embodied, without being a servile copyist. In respect to the Messianic Psalms, it is gratifying to find the author steadfastly eschewing those loose rationalistic interpretations, which are prevailing so extensively in the Congregational and Presbyterian theology of the day."--Nathaniel Smith Richardson, The Church Review, 1851."
