About This Item
Philadelphia: Schooly-D Records, 1985. First pressing Vintage 12-inch single released by Schoolly-D Records in 1985, tagged by "Mix Master Vic C." Discogs Master Release ID m153881.
The vinyl's A-side label includes the misspelling of Schoolly-D as "Scholly-D" and catalog number "SD112," and lacks the warning, "The Recording Contains Explicit Language" found on other releases. Run-out grooves and LP labels match points for first pressings.
Housed in a plain white sleeve as issued, with manuscript ink annotations from a previous owner on the recto and verso, apparently a DJ named "Mix Master Victor C," tagging the sleeve with "(Schoolly-D) P.S.K. / Gucci / R.C.M.P. / 'Mix Master' / 'Vic C' / 1#" on the recto, and " "(Schooly-D) P.S.K / Gucci / 1# / V.C.M.P / 'Mix Master' / 'Vic. C" on the verso, and "P.S.K. Victor Comea C.M.P. PSK Gucci" at the top inside edge of the sleeve opening. On the vinyl's labels are manuscript marker annotations "MixMaster / Victor CMP / Victor. C" on the recto and "Mix Master V.C / Mix Master Victor CMP" on the verso. The record also includes two discreet marker annotations on the runout groove, noting "Vic" on the first side and "DJ Vic" on the second side. The inner paper sleeve includes a manuscript ink annotation reading "The Breakthrough Cinderfella Poetry Dana," presumably referring to the 1987 song "Cinderfella Dana Dane" by hip hop artist Dane Dane.
One of the most influential hip hop songs of the 1980s, "P.S.K. - What Does It Mean," (referencing the Philadelphia gang, Park Side Killers, with which Schoolly-D was associated), is largely considered the first gangsta rap song, with references to gun violence, graphic sex, and drugs, and was a primary influence on the first recordings of Ice-T and Public Enemy, as well as a sample source for the Beastie Boys and countless others. Both of the tracks on the 12 inch single appeared on Schoolly D's debut album, "Schoolly D," also released in 1985.
Outer sleeve, 12.375 x 12.375 inches. about Very Good with some dampstains (see images), price sticker from Funk-O-Mart in Philadelphia, PA, gold stamp indicating this is a promotional copy.
Inner sleeve, 12 x 12 inches. Very Good plus, with a large tear to the sleeve.
Vinyl Very Good plus, with faint signs of use but no apparent scratches.
