MAGNIFICENTLY ILLUSTRATED CELEBRATION OF BRITISH ENGINEERING
first edition large folio (57 x 37.5 cms.) xii (including preliminary blank), 72, 32, 24, 70pp., errata slip at end, 2 engraved title pages plus 141 other engraved plates (some aquatinted) of which 4 are double-page (these 4 allocated 2 plates numbers) and 3 are folding, 6 large illustrations on text leaves (allocated plate numbers), thus in total 153 "plates" as announced on the title page, original publisher's half dark green morocco, spine panelled by raised bands, some mainly light foxing to the plates, short crack at head of front joint and minor scuffing to board corners, but an excellent copy in its original binding, Rare in this condition.
"One of the great illustrated books on engineering of the 19th century" [Julia Elton]. The last of the four sections, which was also issued separately, is A Scientific, Historical, and Commercial Survey of the Harbour and Port of London by James Elmes, Surveyor of the Port.
