About This Item

[London: A. Pugin et al.], 1831. First edition. Quarto. Late nineteenth-century half red roan over marbled boards with titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Engraved title page and 4pp. list of plates followed by 100 lithographic plates, including one hand-coloured (bound without the letterpress title page). A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little wear to the head of the lower joint and rubbing to the spine and corners. The contents with a previous owner's inscription in pencil to the front endpaper, a small hole to the blank margin of one page, a 1cm tear to the blank margin of another, and scattered foxing to the plates are otherwise in very good order. The first edition in book form of this gothic architectural sourcebook containing 100 beautiful lithographic plates of carvings, ornaments and other architectural elements in wood and stone after drawings by Pugin's pupils Joseph Nash and Benjamin Ferrey. The work was originally issued in five parts between June 1828 and April 1831. Uncommon.
