Santa Barbara: Black Sparrow Press, 1994. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. One of 750 signed/numbered hardcover copies, octavo size, 208 pp., signed by Bukowski. Charles Bukowski (1920-1994) was "a prolific underground writer who used his poetry and prose to depict the depravity of urban life and the downtrodden in American society. A cult hero, Bukowski relied on experience, emotion, and imagination in his work, using direct language and violent and sexual imagery" (n.b., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation). As much as he achieved popular acclaim during his lifetime, his reputation and following have only increased after his death.
This volume, "Pulp" would be the Bukowski's final novel, completed shortly before his death. It "comments on the obsessions of the pulp fiction genre, making fun of itself as stereotypical of the genre in the grimiest form...Bukowski wrote some of his most violent, cynical, sarcastic, and shocking work during the final months of his life. Many critics have agreed this novel exemplifies Bukowski showing an acceptance of his own pending mortality" (n.b., quote from Wiki).
___DESCRIPTION: Quarter bound in black cloth over decorated paper boards, red paper spine label with black lettering, red endpapers, title page in red and black, signed on a tipped-in sheet following the copyright page by Bukowski in black felt-tip, this number 344 of 750 signed/numbered copies (there were also 326 deluxe copies with artwork by Bukowski and an unnumbered hardcover trade edition); octavo size (9.25" by 6.26"), pagination: [1-8 plus the tipped-in sheet with Bukowski's signature] 9-202 [1, colophon] [1, blank] [1, black and white photograph of Bukowski] [1, author bio]. In publisher's clear acetate wrapper.
___CONDITION: Fine overall, with clean boards, the spine label not sunned (still bright red), straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; a modicum of light rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards, else fine. The publisher's acetate wrapper near fine with the lightest of edgewear and overall light rubbing to the soft plastic.

Synopsis
Charles Bukowski is one of America's best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose, and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in Andernach, Germany, and raised in Los Angeles, where he lived for fifty years. He published his first story in 1944, when he was twenty-four, and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp (1994).
