Within the text there are 22 black-and-white illustrations by Peter Newell, but the frontispiece is missing. Black coloured boards with red coloured illustration, same illustration as for page 128, with red coloured titles to the front panel and spine. A pastiche on the Arthur Conon Doyle / Sherlock Holmes genre of crime writing. First published in 1897. The book is showing very much its age and wear. Softening and rubbing to the back strip edges and book corners with the underlying board of visible to the corners. Rubbing and fading of the cloth of the book and on the front panel there is a " cup ring " on the top left-hand corner. The book edges show wear and bumping. Browning and foxing and marking to the paper edges. Browning and foxing to the endpapers and the free front endpapers missing from both front and back of the book. The front and back hinges have split with underlying webbing visible. Previous owner's name to the top edge of the half title page and initials to the last page of the text as well as initials to the first page of the text. The illustration between pages 120-21 has become detached. Throughout the book there is handling marks, foxing and heavy browning. Size: 16mo - up to 6 ¾" tall - Sextodecimo. 204 pages,.
