About This Item
Alaska Native Language Center. 2009. Trade paperback. Fine.. 492 p. Includes illustrations. . This book is a product of an unprecedented gathering of Yup'ik Elders from villages throughout southwestern Alaska. In May 2003, under the Kinguliamta Ciunerkaat [Securing A Future For Our Children] project administered by the Association of Village Council Presidents, more then twenty Elders met in Bethel to discuss matters crucial to the wellbeing of Yup'ik people, the oral instruction and rules for living. The contents of this book reflect the progression of the gathering, where Elder men and women were divided into two groups and discussed instructions and maxims concerning the care of children followed by advice for adolescents and married couples. The Elders candidly and thoughtfully shared life lessons that have been passed down from their ancestors in hopes that younger generations will reclaim them. Their guidelines and personal accounts presented in the Yup'ik language with English translations are truly medicine.
