London: Macmillan and Co, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First appearance of f Gurney and Condon's paper announcing that beta decay is made possible by quantum tunneling. First English printing of Gamow's paper announcing the same. This discovery led Gamow to later determine how quantum tunneling allows nuclear fusion to occur and how that powers the sun and stars. 1020 pp. 4to. Blue library binding, ex-Library with Royal College Naval Library bookplate on front pastedown, borrower's card slot glued to front pastedown, due date sheet pasted to first free endpaper. No other library markings present other than the number "53" in white ink at base of spine. Clean within.
