About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Susan Warner was an American writer of children?s fiction and religious fiction who lived in the 19th century and wrote most of her works under the alias of Elizabeth Wetherell. The strong religious influence of much of her work helped her gain popularity as an evangelical writer, and some of her works ? most especially her first book, entitled Wide Wide World, became extremely popular during her lifetime.

Queechy is the story of a young girl of only 11 years of age named Fleda, who was suddenly thrust into an uncertain life after a tragedy forced her to travel to Europe and live with her aunt. Accompanied by young Mr. Carleton and his mother, a rich Englishwoman, she reaches Paris safely, but not before she encounters many young men who simply adored her. Fleda, however, only had eyes for Mr. Carleton, whose helpful but rational attitude betrayed no emotion regarding his affections for her. Will Fleda learn to trust in God in the times of happiness as well as the trials that are still to come?

Warner?s simple yet ingenious tale of coming of age combines a religious attitude towards life with the practical and oftentimes harsh background of living with the many challenges a young girl had to face in the 19th century. The story presents us with a beautiful and inspiring practical example of how one can learn to benefit from trusting in the Divine both in times of joy and in those moments of life when we simply feel like we can?t go on.

Despite its overall evangelical tone, Warner?s book is not overly focused on promoting the lessons of the Bible for their own sake. Instead, the author masterfully blends in the practical teachings of the holy scriptures with the diverse and oftentimes unpredictable experiences and events that make up life in all its glorious and seemingly irrational nature.
