About This Item

London: Hodder & Stoughton. 1922n.d.. 8vo., pp. xi 320, b/w plates, one stained & loose plate, missing f.f.e.p., inscr., tender hinges, or. cl. bds., rubbed edges, good, no d.j. Sir Basil Home Thomson, KCB (1861 – 1939) was a British intelligence officer, police officer, prison governor, colonial administrator, and writer. In 1913, Thomson was appointed Assistant Commissioner "C" (Crime) of London's Metropolitan Police, which made him the head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at New Scotland Yard. When World War I broke out in 1914, the CID acted as the enforcement arm for Britain's military intelligence apparatus. Thomson was involved in arrests in several high-profile espionage cases. One who he interrogated was ‘Mata Hari’ the Dutch exotic dancer later to be executed by the French as a spy. This is one of the numerous cases Thomson discusses in the book: others include Sir Roger Casement (the Irish revolutionary executed in 1916) and Carl Hans Lody (executed as a spy 1914). 1st edition. Cloth Boards.
