About This Item
London, etc.: Cassell, 1887. First edition.. Red pictorial cloth designed and lettered in black on spine and front cover, title in gilt on spine, floral design in black on rear cover. Floral patterned end papers. Armorial bookplate on the inner front cover, modest dust soiling and light edge wear; a fresh very good copy. A page has been carelessly opened at the rear, occasioning some small tears to margins. Two groups of 8-page publisher's ads at the rear, dated "5 G. 9.87" and "5 B 9.87". [We have handled another copy with ads dated "5 G. 7.87" and "5 B. 7.87. - priority unknown]. This is the very copy described by George Locke in Spectrum of Fantasy, pg. 229. Of an island in the West Indies, populated by the descendants of 17th century English castaways, who have adopted a unique culture. An uncommon book in the first edition, these days.
