About This Item

Genet, Jean. QUERELLE DE BREST. Paul Morihien, Paris, 1947. Quarto, wraps, glassine dust jacket, 305pp. 1st Edition. Number 167 of the edition of 460 copies on vélin a la forme, from the total edition of 525.. With 29 illustrations by Jean Cocteau. A tear and a few small losses to the glassine, some intermittent light foxing, overall a Very Good to Near Fine copy of this now scarce book. "The book was prosecuted for affront to public decency (“outrages aux bonnes mœurs”) by the Criminal Court of the Seine, France, on July 3, 1954, and cleared of charges on procedural grounds on April 24, 1956." From Banned Books, An exhibition at the Lilly Library, Indiana University Bloomington, April 2019. Cocteau's illustrrations were deemed scandalous, and a second edition of 1500 was issued, also in 1947, without them. The book was not published in English until 1974.
