About This Item

Washington DC: Quicksilver Times, Inc. Very Good+. 1969. First Edition. Self Wrappers. 24 pages; Washington DC: Very Good+. October 1-10, 1969. 24 pp. Pages; Newsprint, tabloid format. Wrappers slightly toned, but without damage or significant wear. This issue has been folded once at the centerline. No postmarks, address labels, etc. . This issue of one of the mainstays of the DC underground press during its Anti-War heyday is of particular interest for extensive coverage of the "White Panther Party" platform (4 pp. -- including the revised 10 points) . There is also "An Open Letter From John Sinclair: Political Prisoner" -- [p. 9; between composition and publication of this letter, John Sinclair, one of three co-founders of the White Panther Party, was moved from local prison to Marquette Maximum Security prison -- on marijuana charges]. The cover of this issue depicts a photograph of a marijuana plant (uncredited and unexplained) . There is an unusually long (4 pp. ) comic: "The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Go to College!" [There is a blurb at the foot of each page: "Copped from Gothic Blimp, with an address in NYC and subscription info]. It is well known that one of the main members of the collective which wrote, illustrated, and assembled the issues of 'Quicksilver Times' during its three-year run was one "Sal Torey" -- now thought to have been a pseudonym for Salvatore John "Sal" Ferrera. A modern website, easily found by google describes him as a Chicago native with Beatles-style hair, a nervous demeanor and a master's degree from Loyola University (his thesis was on Marxism) -- as well as camera equipment and seemingly never-exhausted spending money for which his fellow collective members had no ready explanation. He was also a CIA spy. " . October 1-10, 1969; Americana and American History, Journalism, Most Recent Listing .
