About This Item
8vo, quarter black cloth over amber marbled paper boards, magenta topstain, 249pp. First American edition, with 'Published by the Viking Press March in 1956' to copyright statement. Unclipped dust jacket (3.50) shows minimal chipping and loss to head and tail of spine, light toning to spine and rear panel. Discreet ex-libris bookplate to front endpaper. Greene's intrigue set in Saigon under diminishing French rule and with early American involvement in the Vietnam War, considered to be a critique of American exceptionalism and interventionism. Adapted twice for the screen, most recently in 2002 starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser. A nearly fine copy in mylar.
