Quinti Horati Flacci Opera cum novo commentario ad modum Joannis Bond. 12mo, 19th century full red morocco, cover gilt-ruled, spine elaborately gilt n 6 compartments, raised bands, inner gilt dentelles, marlbed end papers, pp. xlvi, 299 + 18 mounted photographs after paintings & 2 folding maps, a.e.g. Paris: Firmin Didot, 1855.
Fine copy, with a little darkening of the spine and upper edges of the corners. The deluxe issue with photographs of the engravings after drawings by Félix Joseph Barrias as being a combination of photographs and engravings, and those with just engravings. The editor refers to photography "as the marvel of our century." Didot issued similar editions of Virgil (1858) an Anacreon (1864). With a life of Horace by Didot's son-in-law Noël des Verges. Bookplate of George Bigelow Chase (1835-1902), large Boston ship and railroad owner. Bulletin of the New York Public Library (Spring 1977), #11. Truthfull Len 179 (note to Virgil).
