About This Item

London: Aeneis tabvlis Incidit Johannes Pine, 1737. First edition thus. Tooled morocco. Very Good. Two volumes, octavo. pp: (32), 264, (2) + (24), 191, (15). All text and illustrations engraved exquisitely on copper by John Pine. Impressive lists of subscribers in both volumes. Bound in full black morocco by Zaehnsdorf, elaborately gilt-tooled spines, four corners of upper and lower boards, turn-ins, gilt-patterned endpapers, top edges gilt. Internally fine. Front joints of both volumes just started at top. 9" x 5.25". An impressive set. Notes from OCLC: "First edition, first issue, from the Cambridge octavo of 1701. (See references below.)./ Illustrations and text printed from engraved copper plates./ "Figvrarvm Explicatio": Vol. II, p. [193-205]." Ours is the first edition, second issue, with "potest" in the medallion on page 108 of Volume II. [PRINTING AND THE MIND OF MAN 620: "This edition of Horace was printed wholly from copper plates engraved by John Pine. The text was first set in type, and an impression from it on paper was transferred to the copper, which was then engraved, the decorations being added at the same time. The result was a page of great brilliance and precision, but the method was prohibitively expensive."].
