Small Quarto. xviii, 646 (1), 1 folding map; xi, 620 (1); xi, 559; viii, 594pp. Original bright red cloth with gilt lettering and ruling on covers and spines, housed in original blue cardboard box with gilt lettering and ruling on cover. According to Nevin's bibliography this biography is considered "a classic example of biographical form; exhaustively researched, vividly written, balanced, judicious and definite in its portrayal of the Confederacy's greatest soldier" (Nevin II, 57). Illustrated with sixty-five b/w photographs and documents, including frontispieces, one folding and numerous in-text maps. This is a later printing of the first Scribner's Sons edition of 1934-35. Box with light wear along edges and label lightly sunned. Bindings lightly rubbed and light fading of gilt lettering. Overall in good, interiors in very good condition.
