Volume 1 is signed and inscribed on the first free endpaper.
The inscription reads: "Cordially Inscribed on their Wedding Day for Dr. and Mrs. B. H. Martin at the request of the B. H. Martin BibleClass - B. H. Martin Bible Class, Westhampton Baptist Church, Douglas Southall Freeman"
Douglas Southall Freeman wrote a four volume biography of Robert E. Lee. The volumes won the
1935 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. The volumes include photos. Only volumes 1 & 2 are in this sale. These volumes are first printings, but are NOT first editions - no "A".
The Books are in Good Condition, there are no tears, marks or dog ears to the pages. The covers are bright and the gilt appears in good condition. A few pages show some soiling-pages are in very good condition. The binding is tight. The spines show sunning - no gilt showing. Very small tears at top of spine-(stop pulling books off the shelf by pulling on the top of the spine!)

From the foreward: “After I had accepted the invitation Charles Scribner’s Sons extended me in 1915 to write a biography of General Robert E. Lee I was surprised to find that much the larger part of the source material had never been consulted… For these reasons it became necessary to conduct a long research As this brought new facts to light, a work projected for one volume grew to four.”
