This pre-revolutionary brochure records the workers' struggle in the Ivanovo-Voznesensk region of Russia (modern day Ivanovo), which had a large textile industry in the late nineteenth century. The Ivanovo-Voznesensk strikes became famous for their size, great organization, and determination. Inspired by poor working conditions and significantly lower wages than those paid in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the first united strike of textile workers in Ivanovo-Voznesensk took place in September 1885. Thousands of textile workers went on strike to demand higher wages and elimination of nightshifts, eventually achieving a 5% raise. Another major strike followed in 1987, with 14.000 striking workers and nearly 1.000 military called in to pacify them. Despite the threat of violence, the workers presented a list of demands, some of which were granted. The first Marxist circle was formed among the workers of Ivanovo-Voznesensk in 1892, and by 1898 the circle officially joined the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party (RSDRP). The brochure documents these developments and the organizing effort among the workers, presenting specific figures and strategies. The closing section of the brochure, "Our losses" contains obituaries for individual workers lost during he struggle.
