Boston: William Denton, 1872. Hardcover. Good+. Original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Heavy wear at spine ends. Corners rubbed; a couple exposed tips. Bookseller and previous owner rubber stamps on front paste-down and flyleaf. Missing ffep. Soiling on a few pages. 332, plus [2] pp. ads. 7.5 x 5 inches. Nine discourses given by Denton before the Spiritualist Society at Boston Music Hall between 1868 and 1872 (plus one given before the Parker Society in 1864). The addresses cover issues of Christianity and spiritualism (salvation, personal spiritual integrity, the impact of science, the truth of spiritualism, who are Christians, the temporary condition of Christianity versus spiritualism, protected religious freedom, etc.). William F. Denton (1823-1883) was a prominent spiritualist in the Boston area and a well known professor of geology. His wife, Elizabeth Melissa Foote Denton, was also notable in spiritualist circles. From about 1865 they resided at Needham/Wellesley, Massachusetts.
