FIRST EDITION 1588, Italian text, 8vo, approximately 220 x 150 mm, 8½ x 5¾ inches, Giunti's fleur de lys device on title page, variant fleur de lys device on colophon, historiated initials, portrait of the author facing first page of text, pages: [8], 1-186, [18] description of dome paintings, indexes, errata and colophon, collation: †4, A-L8, M-O4, P². Bound in modern full calf, blind panelling, small gilt lozenge to centre of covers, gilt raised bands, gilt ornament in 6 compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, all edges red. Pale foxing to title page, faint name and 2 tiny stamped initials at top of title page, occasional light foxing within, some pages lightly age-browned, very small pale damp stain to fore-edge margin of pages 17 to 64, pointing hand to 1 margin, ink squiggle in 2 margins, tiny sketch to top corner of page 156, small fine worm track to fore-edge margin from page 83 to 96, another to upper margin from N3 to O1, neither affecting text, Some pale spotting and staining otherwise a good copy. Posthumously published account, in the form of a dialogue, of Vasari's paintings in the Palazzo Vecchio of Florence and his frescos in the dome of the cathedral which were completed by Federigo Zucchero. Edited by the artist's nephew, also Giorgio Vasari. The works discussed in this treatise are considered to be some of Vasari's finest paintings, and it contains precious information on the iconography of the manierist period. Brunet, Volume V, 1097.
