About This Item
(London: Arthur Barker, 1963). 8vo; original charcoal boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. 143, incl. index; numerous photographs; some maps. Dustwrapper a little rubbed, and edgeworn, with some loss; bump to head of spine. Good to very good condition, in a modest dustwrapper. "This book tells the story of the building of the railways of Southern Africa - a story as exciting as that of the building of the American railways but not yet as well known. The builders contended with mountains, deserts, deep gorges, wide rivers, dense forest, fever, the tse-tse fly, lions, elephants and all the wild life of Africa, yet built railways at astonishing speed to open up virgin country and tap the resources of a great continent." .
