About This Item
1963. First Edition . SALINGER, J.D. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour an Introduction (uncorrected advance proofs). Boston and Toronto: Little, Brown, (1963). Very tall octavo (5-1/4 by 11 inches), comb-bound as issued, original green paper wrappers. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. $5800.Uncorrected advance proof of this beloved Salinger work, with publisher's advance slip tipped onto front wrapper.Like Franny and Zooey (1961), these two long stories were first printed in The New Yorker, and form part of Salinger's uncompleted series about the Glass family. ""Rarely if ever in literary history has a handful of stories aroused so much discussion, controversy, praise, denunciation, mystification and interpretation"" (New York Times). This rare uncorrected advance proofclearly derived from the printer's galleys and likely produced in very small numbersis particularly desirable given the textual changes upon publication. Like the rare first printing, this proof is without the dedication leaf, but retain textual errors. See Starosciak A42; Bruccoli & Clark I:315. Pages neatly hand-numbered in black marker.Interior generally fine, light wear and toning to extremities of wrappers, chipping and missing prongs from plastic comb binder. An extremely good copy of a very scarce Salinger proof.
