Three-quarter bound in red morocco by Caldwell in Dublin, straight-grain red morocco boards, gold tooling and paneling on spine, nonpareil marbled endpapers. Bookplate of W. A. Foster, binder label. Marbled edges. Inscription on front flyleaf. Some wear to spine, rear edge, text block edges. Very good. First edition. Fold-out map, viii, 309pp. 8vo. A fascinating book in its first edition, owned by a woman. Frontispiece folding map of "The Valley of Mexico." Charles Latrobe (1801-1875) was born in London and came to America in 1832. After visiting the chief cities in the States, he sailed down the Mississippi to New Orleans, and, in company with Washington Irving, struck out across the prairies and then into Mexico. There Latrobe became fascinated by the lives of Indians, saints, ruins, bullfights, and the opera.
Inscribed by Emily Olivia Lloyd (1830-1912), 1870.
From what we could determine, she wrote in this book the year before her marriage to Morgan Lloyd KCB, who was her second husband. Her first husband was Arthur William Grattan Guinness, m. 1862.
