Set in Southern California after the MexicanAmerican War, it portrays the life of a mixed-race IrishNative American orphan girl, who suffers racial discrimination and hardship. Originally serialized in the Christian Union on a weekly basis, the novel became immensely popular. It has had more than 300 printings, and been adapted five times as a film. Straight but rubbed, rear hinge cracked through: Good only. Jackson wrote Ramona to draw attention to the mistreatment of Mission Indians in Southern California that she had already described in her 1881 book A Century of Dishonor and 1883 Report on the Conditions and Needs of the Mission Indians. Ramona was enormously popular. Though its immediate result was a wave of California tourism, rather than a cry of outrage, Jackson's work did ultimately influence reform legislation (ANB).
