About This Item
London: Printed for H. Curll ..., 1727.. [8],32pp. plus engraved frontis. Octavo. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. Frontis reattached along gutter, long tear along top of title-leaf repaired on verso early on (crossing 'of the Smock' without loss), externally a bit dusty, but a good copy. Second edition of the poet and legal writer's bawdy parody of Pope, arising from the literary feud that began when Jacob attacked a work to which Pope had contributed: THREE HOURS AFTER MARRIAGE (1717), written by John Gay but with anonymous assistance from John Arbuthnot and Alexander Pope. The first edition of Jacob's parody appeared anonymously the same year, with appended poems by four other authors. This second edition includes only two of those poems. A third edition followed along in 1736 and is distinguished by the fact that it was once tucked away in the BL Private Case. Jabob's best known work, THE COUNTRY GENTLEMAN'S VADE MECUM was published in 1717, and was followed by TRACTATUS DE HERMAPHRODITIS: OR, A TREATISE OF HERMAPHRODITES. His legal texts and dictionary for the use of lay people had greater effect than did his occasionally ribald poetry. FOXON J24. OCLC: 9593163. KEARNEY & CRAWFORD 420.
