About This Item
The Hague: Imprimerie d'Etat, 1833. First edition, 61, [1 blank]pp., the text appears in Dutch and French on facing pages, 4 folding plates, marbled endpapers, recent full green calf by Gray of Cambridge (note in pencil by Bernard H. Breslauer to this affect), spine gilt, unopened, uncut. "Containing the first full and authoritative account of the Muller stereotyping process, the earliest known (save the doubtful claim of Valleyre); preceeding Ged's experiments by a comfortable margin. It was overlooked or ignored by the 19th-century historians, who dismissed Muller's products as merely soldered forms of type metal. Its existence was unknown to me or my expert advisor when I was preparing William Ged and the Invention of Stereotype (The Library, 1960). Its significance was recognized (through Ellic Howe's copy) by Percy Muir in 1963". (John Carter). Bigmore & Wyman, III. p.78. From the library of Bernard H. Breslauer.
