About This Item

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1971. First U.S. Edition Stated . Hard Back. Very Good/Very Good. 5 3/4" x 8 1/4. Smith, Jay J. - Jacket Design. 214 Pages. This is the 1971 First American Addition. Very attractive brand new condition book with black cloth and red quarter-spine with black lettering. Dust jacket flap price is $5.95 and is Very Good with a small puncture near the spine and edges show very minor wear. There were four passengers ready to be flown on the racecourse trip, in the new Cherokee Six 300: a large man with a face full of anger; a jockey, apparently angry, too, rigid with anger; an elderly man, Major Tyderman; and a woman, fifty and fragile-looking, the only one of the group not outwardly ruffled. When the plane's pilot went up to the group and introduced himself to the Major as Matt Shore, the Major wanted to know where the regular pilot was. "In Turkey," Matt said. The woman said the last time she'd flown to the races the pilot got lost. Matt promised they wouldn't get lost this time. Though he wasn't too sure of himself and the trip. Flying he could do, but race- course flying, taxi flying, steering yourself by railway lines and coming in on short landings were all new to him. He'd been an airline pilot, flying the big planes radar-vectored into Heathrow, and now, suddenly, he was all involved with racetracks and racing people-including England's champion jockey, Colin Ross, and Colin's sister Nancy, who, the first time she saw Matt, called him "a lousy, bloody skunk." It was all bewildering - and all too soon deadly dangerous.

Synopsis

Hired to fly four racing buffs to the track, pilot Matt Shore expects it will be the kind of job he likes: quick and easy. Until, that is, he’s forced to make an emergency landing just minutes before the plane explodes. Luckily, no one is hurt, but it isn’t long before Matt realizes that he’s caught up in the rat race of violent criminals who are dead-set on putting anyone who stands in their way on the wrong side of the odds…
