A wide-ranging survey of Englsh novels, beginning with Nashes' "The Unfortunate Traveller' with the final novel H. G. Wells's "The War of the Worlds". Between these two, the English novel developed from its Elizabethan beginnings to the Regency and Victorian years. In each of the fifty essays, Phelps gives a brief biographical account, then summarizes the plot, and finally offers a critical commentary. Earlt novels include "The Pilgrim's Progress", "Moll Flanders", "Gulliver's Travels".
