About This Item

New York: Poseidon Press, 1988. Second Printing . Hard Back. Very Good/Very Good. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2. Harris, Karolina - Design. 316 Pages. Light yellow boards with tan quarter spine. Black lettering on spine. Pages 199-201 have a one-inch accidental tear at the top. No other defects noted to this otherwise As New book with no marks or stamps. Real Estate is a dark, wickedly intelligent comedy of manners set in New York City, where the right apartment is as significant as the right lover; where the homeless lie in, filthy doorways, watching limos pull up to the latest chic slum bar; where money and fame may unexpectedly drop on ones shoulders for the proverbial fifteen minutes-or for a lifetime. De Lynn follows a group of characters who yearn for something, they're not sure what; who fall in love and fall apart --- but never --- give up their leases: Jack, an East Village artist who takes refuge from his dark studio and lack of success in the blank white spaces of his older and more successful lover Lorraine's huge, renovated Upper West Side co-op; Lorraine, a fashion entrepreneur whose greatest passion seems to be looking out the windows of her totally empty apartment; her disarmingly hip, finicky teenager, Judy, who learned her manners from Madonna records; her ex-husband, David, who discovers that even the most successful are but a step away from poverty and homelessness; their dog, Jack, whose own claim to space has been disrupted by the pooperscooper law; plus an assortment of recalcitrant Jacuzzis, blenders, sound systems, and air conditioners that are characters in their own right. Crackling with wit and humor, but with a rare humanity and depth. Real Estate is a modern commentary on the tragicomedy of postmodern desires and despair.
