About This Item

Chicago, University of Chicago, 1944, 1944. Hardcover. Good/Fair. Octavo, hardcover, front hinge cracked else VG in somewhat edgeworn brown pictorial dj in mylar. Map endpapers. Very rare book. (no copies found on net). 526 pp. including index. Translated by Samuel Putnam. One of the strangest stories ever found in a little-known corner of history, this is a human and military account of a war waged between a ragged religious mystic and the government of Brazil. It ended only when 5200 houses and every man, woman and child who had lived in them had been destroyed. The fanatic street preacher Messiah to thousands led the rebellion in 1896-97.
