London: Nicol & Cadell, 1784. First Edition. Illustration. Very Good. [Illus. 9.5x15in on 14x19.25in Sheet]; Colored Plate 14 from Nicol & Cadell, 1784, printed with J. Webber del on bottom left and Heath sculp on bottom right; Some soiling to print with several small closed tears on edges not affecting print. [Beddie 1543 and 1743]. John Webber (1752-1793) was the official artist that accompanied Captain Cook on the third voyage of the Resolution and Discovery, 1776-1780. This voyage was to the islands of the Pacific, Australia, the Pacific Northwest America, Alaska, Kamchatka and Hawaii. In Hawaii, Cook was killed in a misunderstanding with the natives at Kealakekua Bay.
Cook visited Nomuka Is., which is part of Tonga or the Friendly Isles from May 1 to 14, 1777. This is an unusual birds-eye view of a large event with set and special postures of the many subjects. From the National Maritime Museum, "Cook is seated between two chieftains inside a hut.
