Done up handsomely in bright red cloth with spine and upper board lettering gilt, octavo, pp. 441, [1], plus one leaf of publisher's ads. Top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded frontis and 11 other full page illustrations inserted. The 6 portrait illustrations are tissue-guarded; the 5 drawings are not. Some pages unopened (see Photo 5). Minor crimping at top page edges from about pp. 16-25 (see Photo 3). Horizontal tear with no loss at fore-edge, pp. 279 / 280 (see Photo 4). A sound copy, about Very Good. Right Honorable West, private secretary to Prime Minister Gladstone, is referred to by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as "tall, handsome, and a favourite in society."
