Although Goode served in Company A of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry and was present at Manassas, "[o]nly some fifty pages of this reminiscence are devoted to [his] Confederate experiences, which included service in the Virginia Secession Convention and the Confederate Congress. Other subjects covered are: early years in Bedford county; law school in Lexington, Va.; pre-war years in the Virginia legislature, with recollections of prominent Virginians; post-war Virginia politics in profusion; and, a eulogistic sketch of Mtthew Fontaine Maury."
