Very rare 1st Issue of Goldwater's renowned exploration of the Colorado and Green rivers, compiled from his personal diary of the journey. Covers reinforced with take along edges. Remnant of sticker to front cover ( not obscuring title).Internally, very crisp and clean.

London: R. H. Porter, 1885. First Edition . Full Leather. Very Good+/No Jacket. 496 pages, plus 25 plates after J. Smit of which 15 are colored. Bound in deep green Mor0ccan leather with raised spine bands gilt lettering and decoration, and dentelle inside covers. All edges are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Covers show a little light rubbing. Lower top corner is lightly bumped, though leather is worn. There are a few light scuffs to gilded edges. Volume remains tight, very clean, and bright. A lovely copy.

The lithograph was created by Robert Carrick (1820-1905) of Day & Son, after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray (1818-1854) was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War, 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery, Inhabitants, & Costumes of Afghaunistan (1847-48). This is plate no. 14, showing two falconers from Kohistan, Khudadard and Guldin, with their hawks. Rattray saw them in September 1841 when they were part of the cavalry escort of his brother, Captain Rattray. Green dealer's label on back of mat from Harold T. Storey, London. Very scarce. In Near Fine Condition: lithograph is clean and bright; minor soiling to mat.

The lithograph was created by Edmund Walker (1813 or 1814-1882) of Day & Son, after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray (1818-1854) was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War, 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery, Inhabitants, & Costumes of Afghaunistan (1847-48). This is plate no. 22, in regard to which Rattray wrote: "I sketched this Uzbeg at the Fort of Lughmaunee, Cohistaun." The ambassador represented Mir Wali, prince of the frontier town of Kulum, near Kunduz. In September 1840 the British were negotiating with Wali to transfer his allegiance to Shah Shuja. Boston: Little, Brown and Company. First Edition . Cloth - Hard Cover. Good+/No Jacket. sm folio. Complete in four volumes, with all plates. All volumes have been professionally and very nicely rebacked, retaining original spine covers. Gilt on spine is good, though slightly faded on a few letters. Covers are lightly rubbed and show a little wear at corners in general, and along the lower edges of volume IV. Small book plate on top front paste down, and inked name on blank front free end page. Free end leaves show a few creases. Volumes remain tight and are otherwise clean and intact.

Folio (12" x 15"), publisher's leather, somewhat crudely rebacked, gilt title on front cover, illustrated with engraved frontispiece and 119 chromolithographed plates with tissue guards, 182, [8] pp. Binding shaken, top cover and spine and front endpapers partially separated from text block, back joint cracked, but still attached, significant wear to covers around extremities, bookplate on front pastedown; contents clean and bright. Published in several editions, the plates are extremely attractive. Studer (1840-1904) was born in New York City, and would become a printer and lithographer. He was also an ornithologist, and seems to have been active in this field in the Columbus, Ohio area after the Civil War. However, it is believed that the plates were based on drawings by Theodore Jasper. The plates while very attractive, are believed to be designed to help with identification.
