About This Item
New York: George H. Doran Company, 1925. Hardcover. Fair. An early Rinehart mystery with supernatural elements. A college professor and his wife inherit an old lakeside estate with a reputation for being haunted. Not believing the ghost stories, they make their first visit to the property and find themselves confronted by a shadowy appartiton holding a lamp with a strange red glowing light. The question is who is trying to scare them away. Or maybe it's why! About 5 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches, 317 pages in green cloth-covered boards with red lettering on front cover and spine. Sorry, no dustjacket. This copy has several problems that include wear at the corners of both boards and at the spine ends; front pastedown has separated from the fep at the fold, exposing the hinges; names of previous owners heavily crossed out on pastedown and fep. That said, the hinges are intact and binding remains firm; rear pastedown and end page w/o problems. Text is complete, clean and unmarked, not ex-library, not book club, not remaindered. No creasing or dogeared pages. So, as it stands, perhaps a candidate for rehab or simply a usuable copy for at least one more reader.
