A RELATION OF THE CONFERENCE BETWEENE WILLIAM LAWD, Thne, Lrd. Bishop of St. Davids, Now LORD ARCH-BISHOP OF CANTERBURY: AND MR. FISHER THE JESUITE…. London: Richard Badger, 1639. 12" x 7.5". [24], 388 pp. Bound in period full calf with title on label in gilt, chip to head, some scuffs and light rubbing to hinges, front turn-ins lifting. Ownership inscriptions to title in early ink, early ink calculations to front blank and title verso, rear pastedown with small drawing (portrait) in early ink, final leaf with some marginal chipping, overall contents are clean but with some water-staining to upper margin in places throughout and a few other minor stains. First edition.

Laud was known for trying to bring uniformity to the Church of England, though his attempt to enforce certain rituals created divisions. The "Mr. Fisher" in the title was actually John Percy, a Jesuit, who was chaplain of the Buckingham household. Due to rumors that Percy was making Catholic converts there, a three-day series of private debates between Laud and Percy would occur. Laud was to argue the Protestant case in the debate, and pamphlets would follow.

Laud would eventually be arrested by Parliament and executed in 1645.
