About This Item

Glendale, California: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 1959. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Small 4to. Pp. 310. Frontis. illustration. Introduction by Hafen. Illustrated with reproductions of historical images. Folding map bound-in at rear, printed black and red. Index. Fore-edge untrimmed. Bound in dark green cloth with dull gilt lettering and rules stamped on spine. Brown topstain, fore-edge untrimmed. Just a suggestion of wear to rear board lower corner, else a bright, fresh copy. First edition. Title continues: A Documentary Account of the Military Campaigns, and Negotiations of Indian Agents - with Reports and Journals of P. G. Lowe, R. M. Peck, J. E. B. Stuart, S. D. Sturgis, and Other Official Papers. Volume IX in the series published between 1955-1961. Handsomely printed on Corsican paper. According to CLARK & BRUNET, the Hafens had done prior work with the Arthur H. Clark Company, but their relationship was "fully established with the 15-volume Far West and Rockies Series."

A work of enduring quality and scholarship, this volume mined significant primary source material, particularly diaries, to thoroughly document the subjugation of the Plains Indians. Production run of this volume was 1,269 copies. CLARK & BRUNET, 104: IX.
